OTTAWA — United States justice officials announced criminal charges against Huawei Technologies chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, confirming that a formal request for her extradition from Canada will be filed this week. Under the rules of the Canada-United States extradition treaty, the U.S. has 60 days, or until Wednesday, to present a formal request to Canadian courts. State newspaper China Daily reacted Monday saying McCallum had been “merely stating the truth” in outlining the arguments Meng could use in court. Extradition requests from the U.S. rarely fail, a senior Canadian justice official had told journalists in December. We are protecting Ms. Meng’s rights within that process and will continue to do so,” he told reporters.
