Anyone who cares about stability and prosperity in Africa, and anyone who understands how important African partnership will be to tackle the foreign policy challenges of the future, is pulling for him to succeed. Ethiopia is one of the world’s dozen most populous countries, characterized by tremendous ethnic and linguistic diversity. Despite real gains over the past years, many Ethiopians still live in severe poverty, and official literacy rates hover at around half of the population. They know this will not be a year’s work—it is a generational project. A clear sense of U.S. strategic interests indicates that it is one that deserves more of our own attention and support.
