By Joshua KirbySentiment among U.S. consumers fell slightly in mid-August, but remained much higher than the same time last year. The preliminary reading of the consumer sentiment index declined to 71.2 in early August from 71.6 in July, according to data from a survey carried out by the University of Michigan released Friday. This missed the 71.7 reading forecast by economists, according to a poll by The Wall Street Journal. "Consumer sentiment was essentially unchanged from July, with small offsetting increases and decreases within the index," said Joanne Hsu, director of the survey.
