U.S. Consumer Confidence Rose Slightly in November on Improved Expectations for Businesses

By Ed FranklU.S. consumer confidence rose in November for the first time in four months, as expectations for future business conditions improved somewhat, despite a likely recession ahead and sustained concerns over inflation and geopolitical uncertainty. The improvement in the indicator reflected a recovery in economic expectations, with the gauge of current conditions largely unchanged, The Conference Board's Chief Economist, Dana Peterson, said. The component measuring expectations for six months ahead ticked up to 77.8 in November from 72.7 in October, reflecting improved confidence about future business conditions, job availability and incomes, Peterson said. Meanwhile, the present-situation index measuring sentiment around current conditions declined a little, however, to 138.2 from 138.6, it added. Confidence increased mainly among householders aged 55 and above, while it declined slightly in householders aged 35-54, according to the data.
