U.S. Consumer Confidence Increases More Than Expected, But Consumers Still Expect Recession


By Ben GlickmanU.S. consumer confidence rose more than anticipated in June, as Americans' outlook on the job market and expectations for the economy improved. Private research group The Conference Board said Tuesday that its consumer confidence index increased to 109.7 in June from an upwardly revised 102.5 in May. "Consumer confidence improved in June to its highest level since January 2022, reflecting improved current conditions and a pop in expectations," said Dana Peterson, chief economist at The Conference Board. The expectations index has been below 80 for nearly every month since February 2022. The board's measure for current business and labor market conditions rose to 155.3 in June from 148.9 in May, with more consumers expressing positive feelings about the job market.
