Tyre mountain racks up $200,000 legal bill for ratepayers

A long-running legal saga over old tyres left Bay of Plenty ratepayers picking up a $200,000 legal bill. Ratepayers forked out more than $200,000 in legal fees over the almost six years it took to resolve a 2000-tonne tyre mountain left behind when a recycling venture hit the skids. Spencer was ordered to pay a fine of $29,750, plus court costs and solicitor’s costs, as well as $25,000 towards the costs incurred by the regional council. The tyres were removed by Spencer and the property owner, the council spokesperson said, with some tyres going to Waste Management in Wiri. The rest of the tyres went to EnviroWaste Mount Maunganui, Kawerau Mill, and some were collected for farm use.
