Two years into the pandemic, women continue to suffer greater economic losses compared with men, report finds

An analysis from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) released Tuesday found women experienced “disproportionate economic losses” compared with men during the pandemic, pointing to the high number of women in industries particularly vulnerable to pandemic restrictions and the precariousness of those positions. Women were significantly impacted by losses in these sectors, accounting for 60 per cent of the cuts. Women from marginalized communities, including people with disabilities and racialized and Indigenous peoples, also continue to face employment barriers two years into the pandemic, the report found. While previous economic recessions had a greater impact on male-dominated industries, women experienced much of the losses during the pandemic, Scott said. “They’ve experienced real economic losses and many of them are leaving these fields in great numbers.”Scott believes the country’s care economy faces huge risks given the loss of workers.
