Two apparently unconnected stories in today’s papers serve as small examples of the wider predicament Theresa May is in. Story one: the budget is to include £320 million for 140 new free schools, which will include the creation of a new generation of grammars. Thirty will open by 2020, with 110 in the next parliament, and could include the first state-funded selective schools in a generation. Now, let’s not get carried away. The new schools will account for just 0.6 per cent of all schools in England.
