Two missing after hydroelectric dam bursts in Vietnam


The accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, when water overflowed in an underground tunnel at the dam in Quang Nam province.Heavy rain caused by tropical storm Rai was responsible for higher than usual water levels at the dam, deputy chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, Huynh Khanh Toan, told a press conference.Initial media reports also said 30 local inhabitants went missing after being hit by rushing water, further down river from the dam.But local chief of police Nguyen Viet Loi said that all those reported missing had since returned home safely or been found.Construction of the Song Bung 2 hydroelectric plant started in late 2012. It has a total capacity of 100 megawatts and is expected to go online later this year.- DPA
