A total of 39 people have died on Irish roads so far this year - nine more than for the same period last year. Gardaí are investigating whether the discovery of a badly damaged vehicle is linked to a fatal hit and run in Cork. The scene where the pedestrian died has also been sealed off to allow for a full examination by garda technical experts. Accident scene investigators were examining the vehicle and roadway which was closed to facilitate the work of the emergency services.
