Two Canadian journalists covering Wet’suwet’en land defenders in B.C. among 15 people arrested by RCMP

Two journalists reporting from the Wet’suwet’en territory were among 15 people arrested and detained by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in British Columbia Friday night. Filmmaker and photographer Michael Toledano, a freelance reporter who has been living in Wet’suwet’en territory in order to create a documentary about what Indigenous people face in the region, was also arrested. Last week, the Gidimt’en clan, one of five in the Wet’suwet’en Nation, set up a blockade in northern B.C. The Star reported Thursday that 15 people were also arrested that day, with RCMP officers arriving in tactical gear, including canine units and heavy machinery. Last year, Bracken won the CAJ President’s Award along with two other reporters for their “moral courage” in defending press freedom from Wet’suwet’en territory.
