The hack on Twitter Inc. that left top accounts spewing an apparent bitcoin scam provided a high-profile demonstration of how difficult it is to stop cyberattacks in real time. The process of investigating attacks can take time as security teams pinpoint vulnerabilities and contain damage, with new evidence potentially contradicting old as it is uncovered. Security teams’ initial assumptions about the threats stemming from insiders or outsiders also don’t always bear out, he added, in part because of attackers’ attempts to camouflage their behavior. Andy Ellis, chief security officer at Akamai Technologies Inc., seen in December 2019, says responding to a cyberattack is even more difficult when threats play out in the public eye. That incident drew input from the security, public relations and legal teams, he said, each with slightly different priorities.
