Commissioner Rob Manfred announces the Minnesota Twins’ selection of high school shortstop Royce Lewis first overall in the MLB draft. Royce Lewis of JSerra Catholic High in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., joined Alex Rodriguez, Chipper Jones, Justin Upton and Carlos Correa on the list of former high school shortstops taken with the first overall pick in the past 30 years. “We couldn’t be more excited about Royce Lewis,” Twins General Manager Derek Falvey told the Twins’ television rights holder, Fox Sports North. The Twins were believed to have been considering him with the first overall pick up until the last moments before the pick became official, before opting to go with Lewis instead. The Washington Nationals were set to make their first-round pick, 25th overall, later Monday night.
