Turkey’s backing of Libya’s internationally recognised government in Tripoli is not ideological but rooted in the country's distress after the countries in the region are strengthening neighbourly relations, an online current affairs magazine the International Interest said. "Unlike the United Arab Emirates or Egypt, Turkey’s involvement in Libya is not ideological. A glance at an influence map of the Mediterranean points to a maritime chokehold forming on Turkey that has alarmed Ankara," the International Interest said. Ankara backs the GNA in the ongoing conflict in Libya, reportedly by supplying drones, weapons and trucks to boost its efforts. A combination of Egyptian, Greek, Cypriot, and Israeli antagonism added to UAE maritime expansionism suggests a dire state (from Turkey’s perspective) with regards to influence in the Mediterranean," the International Interest said.
