Turkey takes over schools in Ethiopia linked to Gülen movement

Turkey has taken over the administration of schools in Ethiopia's Harar city linked to the Gülen movement it accuses of organising the July 2016 coup attempt, state-run Anadolu Agency reported on Wednesday. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan blames Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish preacher living in self-imposed exile in the United States, for the failed coup, and has since been seeking to shutter or take over hundreds of schools around the world run by the Gülen movement. The government’s international educational arm, the Maarif Foundation, had taken over a campus in Ethiopia with various schools providing education from preschool to university level, Anadolu said. Cihad Demirli, a member of the Maarif Foundation's board of trustees, told Anadolu that the Gülen movement-affiliated Rainbow Foundation operated 127 schools in 20 African countries. The legal processes of handing over the administration of other Rainbow Foundation's schools in other Ethiopian cities is continuing, Demirli said.
