Akin Ipek, who fled to London in October 2015 shortly before the seizure of his business empire, described the judgment as “ludicrous and perverse” and “the latest evidence of a total collapse of the rule of law in Turkey”. His brother, Cafer Tekin Ipek, who was arrested in April 2016, was sentenced to 79 years and 9 months in prison and fined 250,000 lira (£32,300) after being convicted of terrorism and tax offences.
