From Facebook's Oculus, Uber's self-driving car project, to Snapchat's Spectacles, which sold more than the iPod did in its first year; hardware is the new software. Having control over hardware is a hard task, but it is arguably the single most effective method to have complete control over the user experience. In early 2000, Google distributed 'toolbar' for then market leading browsers such as Internet Explorer (IE) and Firefox. The toolbar not just made Google search as default in IE and Firefox, but also allowed the company to track users' surfing habits. As I ardent fan of Google and loyal customer of Amazon, I am just grabbing popcorn to see how this turns out.
