The LGBTQ community is increasingly concerned whether President Donald Trump’s expected pick for Army secretary would be able to lead and represent an Army that’s growing more diverse. The current term is more descriptive than the previous DSM-IV term gender identity disorder and focuses on dysphoria as the clinical problem, not identity per se. The state does not currently have nondiscrimination protections on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, although some municipalities do have stronger rules protecting LGBTQ government employees. Green’s confirmation would be a significant break with Eric Fanning, the previous Army secretary. “We are deeply concerned over reports that Mark Green will be nominated as Secretary of the Army,” AMPA President Ashley Broadway-Mack said.
