Donald Trump has stormed to within reach of the White House with shock victories in a swathe of battleground states that sent shockwaves through the Clinton campaign. Strength among white working-class voters propelled the Republican tycoon to victory in Ohio, a swing state without which no Republican has won the Oval Office. That triumph gave Mr Trump a foothold in the rust-belt of the Midwest that threatened to expand into Democratic strongholds. Stock market futures and the Mexican peso plunged as he was declared the winner in Florida, arguably the most crucial swing state. Gold — a safe haven at times of uncertainty — rose sharply as Wall Street and Washington came to grips with the possibility of a Brexit-style shock.
