Washington (CNN) President Donald Trump is not expected to attend the National Teacher of the Year award ceremony at the White House this Monday, a spokesperson for the organization that handles the award said. Nancy Rodriguez, a spokesperson for the Council of Chief State School Officers, told CNN Saturday morning that it was CCSSO's understanding that Trump would not be in attendance for the event on White House grounds and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos would instead present the award to 2019 winner Rodney Robinson. CNN has reached out to the White House and Department of Education for comment. Robinson, according to CCSSO, has taught for 19 years and earned the award after several years teaching at a Virginia juvenile detention center. Politico reported earlier that Trump was not expected to attend the event, and noted that presidents dating to the Truman administration had given out the award.
