The Obamas sing Christmas carols during the National Christmas Tree Lighting and Pageant of Peace ceremony on the Ellipse near the White House in 2015. But they’re saying it was President Trump who brought “Merry Christmas” back to the White House. Or at least that’s the story being peddled by Fox News, a handful of conservative bloggers and the White House itself. That’s a good thing to keep in mind as the lighting of the National Christmas Tree Thursday night kicks off the District’s Christmas season. Speaking of excess, Trump’s first lighting of the National Christmas Tree was an extravaganza for which the American taxpayers footed the bill.
