President Trump visited Texas Aug. 29, after Hurricane Harvey struck parts of the state. (Victoria Walker/The Washington Post)If there is one emerging criticism of President Trump's handling of Hurricane Harvey, it's his apparent inability to empathize. And the Atlantic's David A. Graham has a great piece on how Harvey shows Trump's “empathy deficit.”However fair you think that criticism is, Trump's defenders are overcompensating for it. The point is that these assurances wouldn't be necessary if Trump was better at empathy. And talking about ratings, crowd sizes and the sudden fame of his FEMA administrator while all of this is happening distracts from whatever empathy Trump may actually be conveying.
