China sees Taiwan as part of its own territory despite seven decades of self-rule. Beijing dislikes Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen because her party advocates formal independence rather than eventual unification with China. But since the 12-minute call, the highest level of U.S.-Taiwan dialogue since the 1970s, China has blustered mainly at the United States rather than at Taiwan. China lodged "solemn representation" to the United States, Beijing’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Saturday as quoted by state-run Chinadaily.com.cn. On the call Tsai asked for U.S. help in allowing Taiwan more “participation and “contributions” in international affairs, her office says.
