On Tuesday, White House trade adviser Peter Navarro likened the effort to “an attempted coup d’etat” in an interview with Fox Business News. Democrats have cast the call as an unprecedented effort by an American leader to solicit political aid from a foreign power, although Trump has vehemently denied those characterizations.
