And the headlines will be dominated by the fact that in amongst those new additions are China’s leading AI surveillance unicorns. There is little surprise in the Dahua and Hikvision news, both already face U.S. restrictions and have been criticised for supplying suppressive elements of China’s surveillance state before. In combination, the three facial recognition unicorns have raised billions of dollars—with valuations also measured in multiple billions. But, despite this strong domestic base, China’s surveillance industry is heavily focused on its export market. This technology is not sold in China, but the company does compete from time to time with China's surveillance companies in other countries around the world.
