President Trump intervened in war crime cases against three members of the U.S. military on Friday, issuing pardons for two and restoring the rank of a third, all despite Pentagon concerns that such actions could undermine the military justice system. In his first actions of military clemency, Mr. Trump issued pardons for an Army platoon commander convicted in the killing of unarmed Afghan motorcyclists and an Army major who was set to face charges next year in the death of a suspected bomb-maker.
