Mr. Trump wished a happy birthday to China’s communist government, currently celebrating seven decades of suppressing liberty. As for the current Mr. Xi, he hasn’t been a sweetheart when it comes to human rights. Meanwhile Chris Buckley reports in the New York Times that on a recent visit to Xinyang, China, Mr. Xi honored a memorial to communist fighters from the Mao era. Notes Mr. Buckley:In his seven years in power, Mr. Xi has acted on the belief that to control China he must control its history. For Mr. Trump, it’s a lesson not to expect too much in the way of reform from China’s dictator.
