The Trump administration plans to pick Thomas Brunell, a Texas political science professor, as the new deputy director of the U.S. Census Bureau, to help manage the day-to-day operations of the agency, according to two people familiar with the matter. Mr. Brunell, who has worked at the University of Texas at Dallas since 2005, holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of California, Irvine, according to his curriculum vitae.
