Donald Trump’s betrayal of the Kurds in northern Syria is both a moral and strategic calamity. The United States, and the West in general, used them as allies and surrogates in the region when convenient. Every U.S. ally must consider whether they can any longer rely on any guarantees extended to them by the United States. In the midst of an election campaign almost devoid of debate about foreign issues, the Liberal government condemned Turkey’s incursion into northern Syria but did nothing else. Small measures, but anything to push back against the shame of Trump’s betrayal would be worth doing.
