Trudeau names Giller Prize-winning novelist David Adams Richards to Senate

Celebrated Canadian novelist David Adams Richards has been appointed to the Senate, the Prime Minister's Office said Wednesday. Authors Michael Ondaatje, left, and David Adams Richards, co-winners of the 2000 Giller Prize, pose for the media during a ceremony in Toronto Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000. "I am extremely — extremely — proud to have asked Mr. Richards to serve in the Senate of Canada. Like his predecessors, Richards is expected to sit as an Independent outside of the Senate Liberal caucus. As third-party leader, Trudeau removed all Liberal senators from the national caucus at the height of the Senate expenses scandal in 2014.
