Trudeau can credit election victory to record number of youth voters, according to new statistics

Sixty-eight per cent of eligible voters cast ballots across the country in October, compared with 61 per cent four years earlier. Voting surged among youth in the Oct. 19 federal election that brought Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to power, according to figures made public Wednesday by Elections Canada. Voting also jumped dramatically among aboriginals, according to Elections Canada figures published last week. Turnout on reserves was an estimated 61.5 per cent, up from 47.4 per cent in 2011 — a 14-percentage-point increase, Elections Canada said. The youth vote is credited with helping propel Trudeau, who at 43 was the youngest party leader in last year’s election.
