CALGARY—Several Calgary city councillors are asking unions representing city workers – including police officers – to voluntarily accept wage freezes or rollbacks in light of the city’s ongoing financial problems. It would also ask for five per cent wage cuts from non-unionized city employees and city councillors themselves. While some city unions just signed new collective agreements, Farkas said they need to consider every possibility. At the same time, he added, city council keeps deciding to spend money on projects such as the Olympic bid. The two motions comes roughly a month before Calgary city councillors sit down to discuss tweaks to the four-year municipal budget.
