Sources in the district administration said this was the first time in recent memory that Trinamul and the CPM had come together to lodge a complaint about illegal sand mining. The Bengal government has decided to allow sand mining through e-auction according to the some guidelines laid down by the National Green Tribunal. "We are apprehending violent clashes after a group gets the tender to lift sand. Madanmohan Mandal, a sand trader who got permission through e-auction to lift sand in Monpur, said: "Local groups involved in illegal sand mining are attacking our people who are legally mining sand." Around 950 students of Langulia High School today boycotted classes and protested illegal sand mining in the area.
