Pundits have been waiting for Donald Trump to pivot to the centre since the Republican primaries began. Desi critics of Modi and majoritarianism felt an almost pleasurable pang of déjà vu watching Trump at work on immigration. Like all majoritarians, Modi and Trump want to show their core voters that they know who the real enemy is. But it isn't just the Republican Party that's illuminated in Trump's orange glare, so is America. Like Britain, the US was, in his words, "a fundamentally decent country", in no danger of devolving into "an authoritarian backwater".
