A Dunedin arborist firm has begun felling five eucalyptus trees in Queenstown’s town centre after local companies refused to give quotes for the work on ethical grounds. The Queenstown Lakes District Council planned to have the trees felled on September 27 to make way for construction of a 4m-wide walking and cycling path. However, the work was put on hold for an ecological assessment to investigate whether native birds were nesting in the trees. Workers begin felling five eucalyptus trees in Queenstown yesterday. Queenstown resident Brigid Inder told the Otago Daily Times she was in a small group which watched workers begin removing the trees yesterday morning.
