Tree planting marks Hare Krishna 50th


Dunedin Mayor David Cull (left) and Dunedin Botanic Garden team leader Alan Matchett plant a kowhai yesterday, watched by Dunedin Hare Krishna Cultural Centre co-ordinator Jane Beecroft. A kowhai tree has been planted in the Dunedin Botanic Garden to celebrate 50 years of the Hare Krishna movement in Western culture. Dunedin Mayor David Cull joined Botanic Garden team leader Alan Matchett and co-ordinator of the Dunedin Hare Krishna Cultural Centre Jane Beecroft in planting the tree. The Hare Krishna movement is based on the idea of "simple living and high thinking". She and other members of the Dunedin Hare Krishna Cultural Centre feed more than 200 students daily through the Otago University Students’ Association.
