Principal archaeologist Naomi Woods examines an 1870s soda bottle found under the site of the new Dunedin hospital outpatient site . To her right are a castor oil bottle and another soda bottle also found during excavations. The image behind is Dunedin from First Church Spire, 1874, by Burton Brothers Studio (Te Papa). As part of its building consent conditions the new Dunedin hospital project is obliged to meet a range of heritage requirements, which include allowing archaeologists access to the site and earthworks. "At one point this was one of the most densely populated blocks in Dunedin," Dr Woods said.
