Ofcom, the UK regulatory body for broadcasting, says it will conclude “as soon as possible” an investigation into a Channel 4 Dispatches documentary on Travellers, which aired in April. Ofcom launched an investigation into The Truth About Traveller Crime in May after the episode got more than 800 complaints from viewers, with Irish and British Traveller representative groups claiming that the programme was racist. The 45-minute documentary, hosted by Anja Popp, reported on crimes allegedly committed by a Travellers’ community in Leicestershire and at other sites around England. Popp spoke to members of the public who had allegedly been victims of such crimes, as well as Travellers and their advocate groups. According to Ofcom’s guidelines, the investigation should have been completed within 50 working days.
