Traveller 'frustrated' after world-famous scenic train journey was replaced by bus

When planning his two-week adventure to New Zealand, Canadian retiree Bruce Nobbs had one thing on his list: see the country by train. But Nobbs, a train enthusiast, was left "angry and frustrated" on Wednesday with the sudden cancellation of a routine KiwiRail service aboard the Northern Explorer. "About noon today I got this rude email from KiwiRail saying that I'll be going by bus instead of train." The oldest passenger train service in the country was described as an "epic journey" on its website, passing through some of the country's most scenic destinations, but the bus journey was a little different. "Where we organise bus replacements for a train service, we liaise with the coach provider to organise a journey that is as scenic as possible, while stopping at scheduled rail stations and being mindful of the overall journey length for our customers.
