Transgender prisoner spent three weeks in men's prison

An Auckland transgender woman was held in a men's prison for three weeks in full isolation. The Australian Government applied to have the 47-year-old extradited and after losing a bid for bail, she was held at the Mt Eden Central Remand Prison, a men's prison. Ellis is transgender and during her 28-year career she's advocated for trans prisoners and trans-gender rights. She says only recently a transgender prisoner had to wait weeks for her application not to be strip searched by male guards to be approved. Stuff is aware of a case before the courts, involving multiple allegations of sexual assault by a male prisoner against trans-gender prisoners.
