Track the matriarch to follow the herd

Herds straying into villages is not uncommon in the south Bengal districts of Bankura, Purulia and West Midnapore. Radio collars that use GPS will provide updates in real time about the location of a herd and help track them within the state as well as during migration, conservationists said. The newer system comes with a tool embedded in the radio collar to send signals 24x7. Since matriarchs rule the elephant kingdom, using a radio collar to track the leader is the easiest way to monitor the entire herd. The long-term plan is to also tag male elephants to track their movement if and when they stray from a herd.
