Scotland Yard has concluded there is insufficient evidence to prosecute any individual following a lengthy investigation into electoral fraud and malpractice concerning the 2014 Tower Hamlets mayoral election. Lutfur Rahman, the former mayor of the east London borough, was forced to step down after an election court found him guilty of a litany of corrupt and illegal practices, but he has faced no criminal prosecution. During the investigation – known as Operation Lynemouth – detectives unearthed “prima facie evidence” of a serious offence not directly linked to electoral fraud. This has been passed to the City of London police to investigate because of the nature of the offence, Scotland Yard said. I said changes to how police officers are trained and deployed during elections and how criminal investigations into election fraud are conducted were made as a result of the inquiry.
