The winter sports tournament week got under way throughout the South yesterday in balmy conditions and pupils ran, kicked and tackled as much as they wanted to. There had been thoughts the week, during which pupils attend tournaments throughout the country, would be scaled back or cancelled altogether because of the impact of Covid-19. The South Island schools netball tournament was cancelled but an Otago-Southland tournament began in Invercargill on Sunday. Southland plays host to other school sports with the co-educational under-15 rugby tournament being played in Invercargill over the next couple of days. One unfortunate school sport casualty for the season is the top-four rugby competition which is not being played.
