SANDAKAN: A tour operator wants to see the new Sandakan MP focusing on niche markets and adopt a different approach from existing methods to promote tourism here. The government must think ahead in promoting the Sandakan airport as an international airport and gateway to Sabah’s east coast, before the airport runway expansion is completed. Lim, who is the founder of the Sandakan Tourism Association, said Sabah tourism promotions overseas also should also showcase Sandakan’s wonderful wildlife and not just focus on the state capital and the islands. “To market Sandakan tourism, government bodies must tailor it to what Sandakan has to offer like, through nature shows and photography activities and market it to niche groups like wildlife and nature lovers,” he added. For now, he said only AirAsia is serving the KK-Sandakan route, while MAS flies direct from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan.
