The oil slick shimmers in the bright Hawaiian sun as you visit the USS Arizona Memorial. On 7 December 1941, during the attack on Pearl Harbour in Honolulu, Hawaii, by Japan’s navy fighter planes, the USS Arizona with 1,177 sailors and marines on board, sank. The Japanese forces took the US naval base in Pearl Harbour by surprise and the attack paved the way for America’s involvement in World War II. At Pearl Harbour, incessant bombing by the Japanese sank four US battleships and badly damaged other naval warships, and 188 US aircraft were destroyed. For those interested, there are tours to the battleship USS Missouri, and submarine USS Bowfin.
