There is an over-supply of honey, prices are down and beekeepers are being told to tighten their belts – but it will spell good news for honey lovers. Supermarket company Foodstuffs, which owns the Pak 'n Save and New World chains said non-mānuka honey prices would soon drop in stores. Mānuka honey is still going strong, but the clovers and darker bush honeys are extremely hard to find a market for. In 2006 the pasture honeys climbed to between $12 and $14kg, mainly because they were mixed with mānuka honey and sold as mānuka blend. Competition for sites for mānuka honey between beekeepers had become intense.
