Also named is a nonprofit entity still owned by Justice and his family called the Old White Charities (after the Greenbrier’s famed golf course). According to an opinion of the state ethics commssion, Justice’s ownership of the Greenbrier creates a conflict of interest. According to the Old White Charities’ 2015 and ’16 Form 990 filings, Justice and his daughter Jillean received about $400,000 in compensation per year from organizations related to the charity. Another potential avenue of interest for DOJ investigators: allegations, raised in a civil suit, accusing the Greenbrier and Old White Charities of mishandling money. Last year the Hartford, Conn.-based Travelers insurance company sued the Greenbrier and Old White Charities for allegedly withholding $96,000 in insurance disbursements after the 2016 floods.
