Torstar reports lower loss in first quarter of 2018

Torstar Corp (TSX: TS.B), the publisher of the Toronto Star, StarMetro and other newspapers and digital media properties, reported Wednesday that it had narrowed its fiscal first quarter loss to $14.5 million. That loss, for the period ending March 31, 2018, was down from a $24.3 million loss in the same period a year ago. “Earnings in the quarter were solid and in line with our expectations. We were particularly pleased with subscriber revenue, which is a large and more resilient part of our business,” Torstar president and CEO John Boynton said in a statement. Segmented adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) was $1.8 million, down just $200,000 from the same quarter last year as cost saving almost offset revenue declines.
