Toronto police conduct ‘far too many’ strip searches, says damning report from Ontario’s police complaints director

The Toronto Police Service conducts “far too many strip searches,” “easily” accounting for the vast majority of the thousands of such searches estimated to be done in Ontario each year, concludes Ontario’s police complaints director in a new report. “Over the years, there has been a continuous stream of reported cases involving unconstitutional strip searches. ( OIPRD )Toronto police conducted 17,654 strip searches in 2016 — roughly 37.5 per cent of all 47,050 arrests made that year. In 2014 and 2015, Toronto police conducted strip searches in more than 40 per cent of all arrests. According to the report, six large Ontario services (with more than 400 officers) provided statistics for strip searches conducted between 2014 to 2016.
