Neupauer’s plea to 12-year-old Dattey followed a five-year international legal battle after the boy was taken to Cancun in 2011 for a vacation with his father and never came home. The case was eventually dealt with by Mexican authorities under the United Nations Hague Convention which settles disputes involving the wrongful removal and retention of children. “The Hague Convention is a bunch of crap. That’s why it worked out for her,” said Bookman, one of a handful of Canadian family lawyers who specialize in Hague Convention cases. Now that Dattey is back in Canada, the next round of the fight will likely begin soon over child support.
